WALTHAM, Mass. – May 18, 2011 – Actifio™, the leader in Virtual Data Management (VDM), today announced that it will be a featured presenter during the VMware User Group (VMUG) Connecticut event on May 19, 2011 at the Farmington Marriott Hotel in Farmington, Conn. The one-day conference will feature an Actifio presentation, “Introduction to Virtual Data Management – Data Management for AnyIT™” from 1:15 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. where attendees will learn how they can reduce backup, disaster recovery and business continuity costs by up to 90 percent using Actifio’s VDM solution.

“Tradition has been to deploy a new point tool for every new business requirement; one for backup, another for disaster recovery, yet another for snapshot, and still yet another for business continuity. Each of these point tools are making duplicate copies of your data and overloading the infrastructure,” said Ash Ashutosh, CEO of Actifio. “This is why backup windows and restore windows can never get better. There is no way to fix it and lower your costs with the point-tool approach. With virtualization of IT, it is time to change the traditions.“

People attending the Actifio session will learn how Virtual Data Management is eliminating data vulnerabilities and enabling high business availability by closing all windows, while driving down TCO by up to 90 percent. For virtual, physical or cloud IT infrastructure; AnyIT™.

To register for the Connecticut VMUG user conference, which will run from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on May 19, please visit: http://www.myvmug.org/e/in/eid=30.

The free, one-day seminar will give IT professionals the tips, tricks and advice to better troubleshoot backup systems and improve operational performance.

“With pervasive virtualization of servers and applications, organizations are looking for similar business and operational benefits across other parts of the IT infrastructure,” said Ash Ashutosh, CEO of Actifio. “This is particularly important when it comes to data protection. Too often, virtualization brings more complexity to the data protection process, rather than increasing productivity and performance. To realize the true value of virtualization, companies need to unify their data protection, disaster recovery and backups into a simple, application-centric service that aligns with business needs. During the Storage Decisions Next-Gen Backup School in Boston, we will demonstrate how Actifio VDM can accomplish this, while shrinking the storage footprint by up to 95 percent.”

By introducing virtualization into data management, Actifio delivers an application-centric, SLA-driven solution that decouples the management of data from storage, network and server infrastructure. The result is a single, radically simple solution at up to 90% lower TCO, to efficiently manage all Copy Data for multiple business requirements: data protection, disaster recovery, business continuity, test & development, analysis or compliance, for virtual, physical or cloud IT infrastructure: AnyIT™ . The result is a radically simple approach that delivers zero backup windows, instant restore of consistent point-in-time copies of data at any location, and efficient management of data for analytics or compliance – all without risk. The seamless solution doesn’t require any changes in infrastructure or operational practices. Instead, it inserts into existing infrastructure to protect investments while reducing overall costs by up to 90 percent.

Registration for the free Storage Decisions “Next-Gen Backup School” seminar begins at 8:00 a.m. and the event runs through 2:45 p.m. For more information, please visit: http://storagedecisions.techtarget.com/seminars/backup_school.html?Offer=eventsite.

Paradise Transforms Multiple Silos of Data Protection and Disaster Recovery Tools into Single Operation with Actifio’s Virtual Data Management Solution

Manufacturer of Custom Sauces Streamlines Backup Operations by Over 88 Percent and Achieves 8x in Storage Space Savings with Next-Generation Data Protection Solution

WALTHAM, Mass. – April 26, 2011 – Actifio™, the leader in Virtual Data Management (VDM) today announced that Paradise™ has deployed the Actifio virtualized data management solution to transform multiple silos of data protection and disaster recovery tools into a single, simple data management operation. As a result, Paradise has optimized its data protection management and backup processes by over 88 percent while reducing production storage costs by 8x.

For 19 years, Paradise has helped its customers in the foodservice industry and leading restaurant chains capitalize on the latest trends with custom sauces while providing responsive culinary and R&D support to help grow their businesses more cost-effectively. Paradise continually refines its own processes to leverage the latest technological innovations to increase efficiency at its three state-of-the-art facilities in Louisville, Kentucky and California.

Paradise had challenges managing data protection in its mixed IT environment comprised of a physical Microsoft server and virtual VMware environment running Microsoft Exchange for email, BlackBerry for messaging and various other reporting, ERP and production control applications. Software maintenance and license costs grew as more data was protected, and backup data was growing exponentially. Some applications were protected by traditional backup software, which was inefficient and consumed expensive storage quickly because of redundant data copies. Other applications were protected by four different point tools adding additional management challenges and costs.

The complexity of data protection was overwhelming and Paradise needed a solution to efficiently protect its physical and virtualized applications without adding to OPEX. To streamline data protection and disaster recovery for greater efficiency and cost savings, the company implemented Actifio’s virtualized data management solution between its two data centers in Louisville. The Actifio solution was configured to replicate data across multiple sites with a simple, automated policy-based approach to provide seamless data protection and disaster recovery capabilities. Actifio's DMV solution simplifies virtual and physical application backup, disaster recovery and local protection, using existing SAN capacity for additional cost savings.

“With Actifio, I create the application SLA, which describes my local data protection, daily backup, and deduplicated replication policy and the solution takes care of the rest," said Ryan Swain, director of IT at Paradise. “Since installing the Actifio solution, configuration and maintenance of data protection is measured in minutes and restore time went from days to seconds."

Moving to a single Actifio interface to manage all data protection tools has also provided Paradise with many other benefits:

• 90 percent reduction in administrative overhead
• 70 percent reduction in storage capacity by storing Actifio local and remote data protection on existing HP EVA arrays
• 40 percent space saving after the first backup with Actifio efficient global deduplication engine
• 75 percent more efficient business continuity planning
• 89 percent reduced bandwidth needed for replication with Actifio deduplicated replication technology

"Many companies find themselves in the same predicament as Paradise; they are heavy users of technology, and as their infrastructure grows, so do the number of point solutions for protecting specific physical and virtualized assets," said Ash Ashutosh, CEO of Actifio. "With Actifio, the company gained one solution for all its data protection, backup and disaster recovery needs and simplified its operations while drastically reducing the TCO."

Actifio Named One Of "Top Ten Storage Startups" By Infostor
actifio
Company Recognized for Technology Innovation that Delivers Single Solution for Backup, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity

WALTHAM, Mass. – February 15, 2011 – Actifio™, the leader in Data Management Virtualization (DMV), today announced that InfoStor has named it to its list of "Top Ten Storage Startups." InfoStor Editor-in-Chief Dave Simpson selected the list from startups that launched or shipped their first products during 2010 and factored technology innovation, company management and funding into his decisions.

Shortly after Actifio introduced its groundbreaking Data Management Virtualization software suite, Simpson noted in a July 21, 2010 blog post that “Some storage startups anticipate a trend then ride the coattails of the trend. Other startups actually create trends. One startup that may be in the latter category is Actifio.”

Industry’s First, Single Solution for Backup, Disaster Recovery and Business Continuity
Data protection, disaster recovery and business continuity are business critical initiatives traditionally addressed by complex, expensive and inflexible infrastructure made up of multiple point tools. Each of these tools independently copy, store, move, and restore duplicated, redundant data. Organizations end up with typically close to120 duplicate copies and spend 3-5X more on making and managing these duplicate copies than the original production data. At the same time, rapid growth in data size is leaving critical business assets vulnerable to loss due to backup, restore and replication windows.

Actifio has changed the way organizations manage this convoluted process by ushering in Data Management Virtualization. DMV works with an organization’s existing infrastructure and virtualizes the management of independent, duplicate copies of data into one platform eliminating redundancies and repurposes the unique data for different data management applications. The result is a single, application-centric, SLA-driven solution for data protection, disaster recovery and business continuity for virtual, physical or Cloud IT environments that reduces the data protection storage footprint by 95%, lowers storage acquisition cost/GB by 50% and reduces network utilization up to 70%.

“Today’s data center is filled with multiple point tools from multiple vendors to handle multiple data protections tasks such as backup, snapshot, and disaster recovery - a situation that results in multiple copies of redundant data,” said Ash Ashutosh, CEO, Actifio. “As a result IT administrators have been left with an expensive, confusing mire of data protection applications, multiple SLAs and data proliferation that adds complexity at every step. With a purpose-built data management virtualization solution leveraging the existing infrastructure, Actifio repurposes a single unique copy of data for multiple applications, transforming data management into an efficient, service-oriented operation that is radically simple and lowers the cost by up to 90%.”

A New Era of Post-Production Data Management Software is Dawning
actifio
By Jerome M. Wendt

Nearly every small, medium or large organization is heading down the path of adopting disk-based data protection as a way to solve their legacy problems of backup to tape. But what many of these organizations have yet to recognize is that as they adopt disk to store these post-production copies of data, a new opportunity is presenting itself. They now have the option to manage and leverage post-production data in ways that were never possible when on tape but now lack the tools to do so.

Nearly every organization is somewhere on the journey towards implementing disk-based backup. But that does not mean every organization is implementing it in the same way or using the same technologies. Some are introducing disk in lieu of tape as a backup target. Others are using disk-based snapshots while still others are using some form of replication. Some are even using a combination all of these forms of disk-based data protection.

Then as they store this post-production data on disk they are looking to optimize how this data is stored. This is leading most organizations to try to deduplicate this data whenever possible and then use replication to move the data off-site.

But now that organizations are storing all of this data to disk, they have both a new opportunity and a new challenge in front of them. The opportunity is they now have near-real time copies of production data on disk.

These post-production copies of data are at most 24 hours old and may only be hours, minutes or seconds removed from the production copy of data from which they were derived. As such, they are excellent candidates for use for testing, development and disaster recovery.

At the same time, the challenge is finding software that can do this "post-production data management." After all, it is one thing to create a backup, snapshot or set up a replication job for a particular set of production data. But it is quite another job to then manage the tens, hundreds or even possibly thousands of these copies of post-production data in such a way that they are useable and easily managed by an organization.

These requirements are making it evident that a new category of software, which I refer to as "post-production data management software," needs to emerge. This software needs to give organizations the ability to manage this post-production data in such a way that they may perform tasks like:

• Minimizing or eliminating backup and recovery windows by ensuring that data is on the right tier of disk at the right
time
• Ensuring that these post-production copies of data (backups, snapshots, replicated) are deduplicated whenever possible
to conserve storage capacity
• Data is replicated locally or remotely so business continuity and disaster recovery can occur automatically with
minimal need for setup or ongoing management

Already we are seeing these next generation types of post-production data management capabilities begin to emerge. This last week FalconStor announced its new RecoverTrac technology that is now part of its Continuous Data Protector (CDP) software. RecoverTrac's purpose is to help CDP's snapshots and replication features deliver real world, turnkey business continuity and disaster recovery functionality without requiring organizations to spend tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars and numerous man hours in order to deploy, test, implement and manage it.

InMage is another company that has also been doing something similar for some time. In a series of two blog entries I wrote a couple of years ago I covered how a Dr. James Tu, an Information Security Officer at a real estate company, was using InMage Scout's replication capabilities to replicate data between two sites. Then within Scout he was creating virtual mount points so he could use them to perform recoveries at the secondary site.

Yet possibly the most interesting entrant in this emerging space is a new company called Actifio. It has built its entire platform around this concept of post-production data management and has gone beyond just acting as a backup target, replicating production data or creating snapshots of production data. While it can perform all three of these functions (it can act as either a backup target or a production file system which replicates or takes snapshots of production data) its ultimate objective is to optimally manage the post-production data under its control.

Once it has these post-production copies of data in whatever form they take (backup, snapshot or replicated,) Actifio can then deduplicate this data, put it on the appropriate tier of disk for recoveries or replicate it offsite for DR.

What specifically makes Actifio unique is its virtualization technology to re-purpose a unique copy of all post-production data for each of the different operational requirements. Instead of the complexity and cost of multiple tools for backup, snapshot, deduplication, disaster recovery or business continuance, Actifio is a single solution that manages data through its entire life cycle.

In the next few years I expect almost every size company to complete the transition from tape-based backup to using some form of disk-based data protection. However once that transition is complete, these organizations are going to recognize that just having all of their post-production data stored on disk adds insufficient value to their organization.

Instead they will want the option to easily and centrally manage where this post-production data is placed to facilitate business continuity, disaster recoveries and even operational testing and development of production applications. It is for this reason that I believe that companies will rapidly move beyond just implementing disk-based data protection and that a new era of organizations wanting and needing software that automates the management and placement of their post-production data is dawning.

Actifio Reveals Survey Findings From Vmware Users Group To Identify Top Barriers To Data Protection Deployments In Today’s It Data Centers

IT Decision Makers Cite Management Complexity Concerns, Total Cost of Ownership and Network Bandwidth Issues as Key Obstacles to Comprehensive Disaster Recovery Initiatives

WALTHAM, Mass. – February 9, 2011 – Actifio™, the leader in Data Management Virtualization (DMV), today announced the results of a survey completed at the VMware Users Group (VMUG) on January 20th, 2011 at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Massachusetts. The survey was comprised of over 900 IT respondents highlighting the barriers to adopting a comprehensive data protection environment. The industry survey asked data center managers and decision makers at large and medium organizations to rank disaster protection priorities for 2011, based on importance. Key findings from respondents included the following:

• 82% of respondents indicated that the complexity of procuring and managing multiple data protection tools was the number one obstacle to deploying a comprehensive data protection environment
• 69% revealed that the total cost of ownership of purchasing and managing multiple point products was another top concern to implementing a robust disaster recovery plan
• 43% of those surveyed highlighted network bandwidth costs as the third barrier to implementing an end-to-end disaster recovery plan

Today’s data center is mired with multiple legacy data protection tools that can’t keep up with data demands and invites risk at every step. The challenges of managing multiple copies of data across these point tools for backup, disaster recovery, business continuity, analytics and compliance result in an additional 13 to 120 copies of production data stored within the IT infrastructure. This duplication of effort costs 3 to 5 times more than managing the production data itself. The issue is further intensified by the inability to manage data within available business windows - leaving organizations vulnerable to data and productivity loss and increased risk.

Actifio has applied virtualization technologies to data management and transforms individual silos of point tools into a single solution managing the lifecycle of data - providing organizations the freedom to use any application, any server, on any storage device, on premise or in the cloud. Actifio delivers a solution with zero backup windows, instant restore, long-term backup, disaster recovery and business continuity and is independent of the application, operating system, server storage, or network technologies. With integrated global deduplication, compression, network optimization and storage virtualization, Actifio is setting a new industry benchmark for ease of use, reduced storage footprint, network utilization and up to 90% lowered TCO.

“The survey confirms the pain administrators face every day in managing the complexity, cost and risk of multiple islands of data protection tools that strain IT resources and stretch network bandwidth performance,” said Ash Ashutosh, CEO of Actifio. “Our customers have found a better way to address the dilemma of managing layers of resources and processes to stay ahead of the problem. Instead, they are solving the issue by virtualizing data protection to consolidate disparate disaster recovery applications into a single, fluid data protection environment across the data lifecycle.”

Actifio™, the leader in Data Management Virtualization (DMV), today announced it is a presenting sponsor of Tech Field Day 4 San Jose, an invitation-only event organized by Gestalt IT being held at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Jose, Calif., on Nov. 11-12, 2010. The topic of the company's presentation, "Dynamic Data Management Virtualization” will take place on Friday Nov. 12th from 7:30 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. PST.

Ash Ashutosh, president and CEO of Actifio will discuss how Data Management Virtualization transforms the infrastructure from individual silos of point tools into a cost-effective virtualized solution managing data across the entire lifecycle. Until now, organizations have had to use multiple solutions to address all these different parts of the process, leading to a complex, expensive infrastructure that is difficult to deploy, difficult to manage, and inflexible. The result is radical simplification of data protection, disaster recovery and business continuity operations, reduced storage footprint and network utilization that delivers up to 90 percent reduction in TCO.

"Being a Tech Field Day sponsor gives Actifio a great forum to engage with a group of influential bloggers, delegates and industry influencers to share best practices and game changing technologies that are transforming the traditional data center into a dynamic virtual IT infrastructure,” said Ash Ashutosh, president and CEO, Actifio.

Actifio's groundbreaking software suite includes ActifioTM DP for data protection, ActifioTM DR for disaster recovery and ActifioTM BC for business continuity, all built on Actifio's VirtualData Pipeline™ (VDP) technology. The software suite simplifies disaster recovery and data protection by combining storage virtualization, data de-duplication, compression, encryption and network optimization to automate the copy, store, move and restore operations, while helping IT deliver a service catalog with defined SLAs.

On Tech Field Days, Gestalt IT brings together innovative IT product vendors and a select group of independent thought leaders, allowing them to get to know one another. Attendance is by invitation only; delegates are bloggers and others selected based on the independence of their critical thinking and discussion, their knowledge of technology, their contribution to the advancement and sharing of knowledge in the technology community and their ability to add to the Field Day discussion.
